About

My name is Renee. I am a Registered Dietitian (RD) and the owner of Nutrition Redefined. I left a successful career in the architecture/engineering industry to follow my passion of helping others with celiac disease, non-celiac wheat sensitivity, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and other gut health issues.

I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and completed my Dietetic Internship (1200+ hours of supervised practice) at the University of New Mexico. I also received my Master's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of New Mexico. I am registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and am a Licensed Dietitian (LD) in New Mexico.

Most of my experience has been with clinical medical nutrition therapy, celiac disease/gluten intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), weight management and corporate wellness. I am the gluten-free diet expert for celiac disease for the Albuquerque, NM metro area. I also specialize in the use of the low FODMAP diet for a variety of conditions.

In addition to my private practice, I wear multiple nutrition-related hats:

My professional memberships include:

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Dietitians in Medical Nutrition Therapy Practice Group

Dietitians in Gluten and Gastrointestinal Disorders Dietetic Practice Group (Chair)

New Mexico Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

National Celiac Association

On a personal note, I live near Albuquerque, NM with my husband of 20+ years, my crazy Labrador, a flock of egg-laying hens and a couple of honeybee colonies. In my spare time I enjoy walking in the natural areas outside my front door with my husband and dog, “botanizing” with my husband, reading, cooking, gardening, bird-watching, and doing yoga.

Philosophy

Nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. Whether you live on fast food or cook everything from scratch, we will find common ground and work to make small changes to reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life. I believe in personalized nutrition and we will work together to come up with nutrition goals and a plan that works for you and your lifestyle.

I provide nutrition counseling with a focus on healthy eating habits. I don’t believe in self-sacrifice or punishment. I don’t believe in self-deprivation and unnecessary restriction, but instead, working to find a healthy balance of foods that nourish our body and mind.

Why Choose a Registered Dietitian?

A Registered Dietitian (RD) (or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)) is a trained nutrition specialist with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nutrition science from an accredited university. The topics studied range from food and nutrition science, food service management, business, culinary arts, psychology, exercise physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and microbiology.

A RD has also completed an accredited supervised practice program at a healthcare facility (also known as a dietetic internship). In order to become an RD, one must take a nationally accredited examination through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Once registered, RDs are required to complete a minimum number of hours of continuing education per year.

Every Registered Dietitian is a Nutritionist, but not every Nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian.
